Marseillaise

This new sort of coffee is the result of work of breeders on improving the Sarchimor variety in several countries. The work on its creation started in Brazil, and the certified species was obtained yet in Nicaragua. The variety is characterized by a combination of very high-quality cup and high resistance to various diseases. It is considered one of the most promising coffee varieties in Mexico.

Typica

The variety is originally from Ethiopia, it has perfectly adapted to Mexican soil. Is characterized by low productivity, susceptibility to fungal diseases, however, it gives a great taste in a cup. Despite the heavy losses of this species during the last epidemics of leaf rust, it occupies a significant place in the list of the most popular varieties of Mexican coffee.

Bourbon

Got its name from the old name of the island of Reunion, where its cultivation began. Along with Typica, it has long been the most popular type of coffee in Mexico. Is notable for its good productiveness and excellent quality cups. One of the disadvantages of this species is the weak resistance to the leaf rust.

A natural mutation of Typica, discovered in 1870 in Brazil. It is characterized by very large dull blue grains. Possesses the balanced acidity with soft nut shades of taste. Mexico is rightfully the world leader in growing this very valuable variety. The main manufacturing state of Maragogype is Chiapas, where it can be found in such coffee regions as Soconusco, Mapastepec and Jaltenango.

Catuai

A hybrid developed by crossing Caturra and Mundo Novo in Brazil. Catuai plants are relatively low, and the branches form short angles with the trunk, the fruit tends to remain firm and not easily separated from the branches, which makes it well adapted to a windy and rainy climate. In Mexico, it is often found in the region of Soconusco, in Chiapas and Puebla states.

Mundo Novo

Brazilian variety of Arabica is the result of the natural interbreeding of Typica and Bourbon. Large trees of this variety are poorly adapted to strong winds. It has a very high productivity and good quality in the cup, commercially very attractive variety. Therefore, in Mexico, it is more common in mixed planting with other varieties.

A natural Bourbon mutation developed in Brazil. It features high productivity and good quality cups. The small trees of the Caturra perfectly adapt in a very rainy and humid climate. Therefore, this species in Mexico can often be found in the states of Veracruz, Chiapas and most often in mixed planting with Typica, Bourbon and Catuai.

Oro Azteca

Oro Azteca is a hybrid of Catimor, developed at the Institute INIFAP, Chiapas, Mexico. Under the conditions of the constant threat to coffee trees from various fungal diseases, the most terrible of which was the leaf rust epidemic, this hybrid is considered perhaps the most promising for the development of commercial coffee in Mexico. Oro Azteka is characterized by excellent resistance to diseases, a large range of altitudes of growth, high productivity and a very good profile of the cup.

Garnica

A hybrid obtained as a result of the crossing of Mundo Novo and Caturra, appeared in 1961 as a result of the selection work of the Mexican Coffee Institute INMECAF. It is characterized by high productivity, good resistance to diseases and a high-quality profile of a cup. Ripe berries of this variety can be both yellow and red. Garnica is considered to be one of the main varieties of arabica of a new generation in Mexico. The work aimed to improve it continue up until now.

Costa Rica

The hybrid of Catimor obtained in 1995 experimentally in Costa Rica. It is characterized by excellent resistance not only to the leaf rust, but also to other coffee diseases, in particular to the Rooster's Eye. Also it should be noted unpretentiousness of this hybrid and survival capacity at low altitudes. And, of course, Costa Rica has a very good productivity. In Mexico on plantations this hybrid is very often “a friend indeed” of such varieties as Typica, Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuai. This is perhaps the most promising commercial coffee brand for Mexican coffee makers.

Sarchimor

The hybrid obtained by crossing Timor and Villa Sarchi has been developed at the International Coffee Roya Center in Portugal. It is characterized by excellent resistance to coffee diseases, it adapts well at medium altitude, has high productivity, a small number of empty grains and good taste. However, it is very picky about the quality of the soil. Mature grain has a very characteristic dark red color. It should also be noted that Sarchimor became the “parent” for numerous promising coffee hybrids.

Catimor

Developed in Portugal in 1959 and introduced in Brazil in 1970, Catimor is
the result of crossing Timor and Caturra. The hybrid was created with two goals: firstly, to reduce the losses of the Brazilian coffee industry from up to 20%, and secondly, to increase the productivity and high-altitude adaptation of the plant. In Mexico Catimor is quite common, mainly in mixed plantings. Like Sarchimor, Catimor gave parental material to many modern hybrids that are resistant to diseases and high productivity.

Geisha

The original variety from Ethiopia, best rooted in Panama and Costa Rica with exceptional high quality and original flavor. Geisha is difficult to cultivate due to the low productivity and serious labor costs. In addition, it makes sense to cultivate the highest quality coffee of this variety at high altitudes. Nevertheless, more and more high mountain Mexican farms start successfully growing Geisha variety.

Obata Red

One of the youngest and most promising hybrids, created in Brazil, based on Sarchimor. In addition to the characteristic of new hybrids of high productivity and high-altitude adaptability, Obata has exceptional resistance to all types of leaf rust, which makes this variety particularly attractive for the production of commercial coffee at low and medium altitudes.
