Guadalupe Miramar – The Cradle of Excellent Coffee
Guadalupe Miramar is a world-renowned cradle of excellent coffee, located in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca at an altitude of 1,745 meters above sea level (coordinates: 97°47’57.835 W, 17°00’03.427 N). The community is part of the municipality of Santa María Yucuiti, where the Tierra Amarilla farm is located.
Climate
The climate in Miramar is divided into three types: semi-warm, temperate, and cold.
The semi-warm climate extends from 1,127 to 1,698 meters above sea level, with temperatures reaching up to 28°C.
The temperate and cold climate ranges from 1,556 to 2,052 meters above sea level, with average temperatures of 22°C and 10°C respectively.
It is worth noting that during the rainy season, annual rainfall reaches 1,031.5 mm.
Flora and Fauna
The flora and fauna found on the coffee plantations are highly diverse. Among the tree species present are: guananche, guarumbo, guajinicuil verde, guajinicuil perico, quebracho, oak (green, red, black, and yellow), capulincillo, amate, as well as fruit trees such as lemon, nance, mango, guava, and others.
The fauna includes mammals, reptiles, and birds such as raccoons, deer, rabbits, badgers, iguanas, snakes, green snakes, scorpions, vultures, sparrow hawks, chachalacas, and more.
Coffee Varieties
The mesophilic forests of the region allow the García López family to plant, cultivate, and harvest different coffee varieties such as Gesha, Marsellesa, Typica, Red Bourbon, Sarchimor, and others.
Family Legacy
Producers Filogonio Crescencio García López, Efraín García López, and their brothers represent the second generation of coffee growers in their family. They cultivate excellent shade-grown coffee on plots ranging from 1 to 2 hectares. Despite steep slopes of more than 40°, they have adapted their methods to successfully grow coffee on these challenging terrains.
Their father, Mr. Jerminiano Brigido García Feria, planted the first coffee trees and represented the first generation of García López coffee producers, working from 1958 until 2015.
Challenges and Renewal
Before the arrival of coffee rust in 2014, they produced up to 20 quintals of parchment coffee per hectare. However, this disease destroyed more than 90% of their production. Despite the setback, they began renovating their coffee plants and introducing new varieties.
At present, the García López family produces coffee at altitudes ranging from 1,200 to 1,700 meters above sea level. Their focus is on quality over quantity, achieving about 10 quintals of washed parchment coffee per hectare. Combining all their microlots, their annual production exceeds 70 quintals. Each microlot is evaluated with a minimum score of 84 points and a maximum of 87.75 points (washed process).
Production follows sustainable protocols, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity.
Coffee Brand and Next Generation
Today, the García López family sells parchment coffee, green coffee, roasted, and ground coffee under their own brand “Bemfs Coffee Producers”, created in 2022 by 21-year-old Edgar David García García, who belongs to the third generation of coffee producers in the family and is responsible for marketing and logistics.
Additional Information
The García López family manages a coffee nursery producing about 20,000 plants annually, used for farm renovation and partially for sale.
In 2022, Efraín García López won 2nd place as one of the best coffees in Oaxaca at the Specialty Coffee Fair, organized under the “Production for Wellbeing” program.
In 2022, producer Filogonio Crescencio García López obtained a varietal certificate for Gesha, issued by the Regional University Center Oriente (CRUO) and the National Center for Research, Innovation, and Technological Development for Coffee (CENACAFE).
In 2023, Filogonio Crescencio García López received a seed certification for Gesha from the National Seed Inspection and Certification Service (SNICS). His efforts resulted in a remarkable 96% germination rate for Gesha seeds.
