La Finca Casa Blanca – Coffee from the Heart of Veracruz
The great-grandfather of the current owners of La Finca Casa Blanca once cultivated citrus, but after the trees were devastated by disease, he turned to coffee production. Today, Manuel and Mario Fernández manage 50 hectares of coffee plantations located in the heart of the coffee-growing region of Veracruz, within the municipality of Coatepec, at an altitude of 1,100 meters above sea level.
Climate and Soil
The climate here is moderately humid, with an average temperature of 19.2°C and an annual rainfall of 1,926 mm. The soil is rich black earth mixed with volcanic ash, containing a high level of organic matter. These conditions create an excellent environment for coffee cultivation.
Coffee trees grow under 45% shade provided by a diverse canopy of mandarin, chalum, macadamia, guava, banana, and other trees.
Varieties and Cultivation
After overcoming the epidemic of coffee leaf rust, most of the plantations were replanted with mixed varieties, including Typica, Catimor, Costa Rica, Bourbon, and Mundo Novo. More recently, Sarchimor and Iapar varieties have been introduced.
To prevent plant diseases, the coffee trees are nourished with organic compost and treated with inputs that comply with the standards for organic coffee.
Harvest and Processing
The harvest season begins in October and reaches its peak in December and January. During this period, the workforce grows from 4 permanent workers to about 80 pickers.
The farm produces exclusively washed coffees, prepared in both European and American preparations. In green form, the farm sells up to 60 tons, while the rest is roasted and marketed domestically under its own brand.
Pride and Innovation
The farmers take great pride in their coffee seedling nursery, which is regarded as one of the most advanced in the region, ensuring both quality and sustainability for future harvests.
